The Grice-Fearing House, also known as the Blue Ruby Inn, is a charming, historic home located just five blocks from the Elizabeth City waterfront, in the downtown historic district. Originally constructed in 1798 by Francis Grice, the Blue Ruby Inn is the oldest residence in Elizabeth City and proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1808, the house was willed to Grice’s widow, who later remarried Isaiah Fearing. The property remained in the Fearing family for over 160 years, showcasing its significance in local history. As it changed hands through generations, the home adapted to accommodate growing needs, including the integration of a smaller house from a neighboring property in 1840, along with the addition of a new southern wing and a northern wing in 1885. Although a fire in 1948 caused some structural loss, the original craftsmanship has endured through decades of modifications, making it a welcoming port for those seeking Elizabeth City accommodations in this charming harbor town.
